Before You Put Money Into Google Ads, Make Sure You Can Run the Campaign

Cannabis paid search starts with eligibility.

We need to know what the business sells, where it operates, who the customer is, what the landing page says and how current Google policy applies to the offer.

Some business models have a legitimate paid-search opportunity. Others are ruled out by platform policy, jurisdiction, economics or the way the offer is presented before a campaign should ever launch.

ColaDigital is the active digital marketing agency I run.

My ColaDigital paid-search work has included regulated cannabis, CBD and medical-cannabis campaigns in both the United States and Canada. The strongest accounts were built around an offer we could defend, qualified intent and landing pages that matched what the ads actually promised.

DankRank will not disguise prohibited products, cloak landing pages or promise an approval Google controls.

Policy Review Is Part of Campaign Strategy

Cannabis advertising gets oversimplified into a list of banned words.

Real accounts are more complicated.

A medical service may be eligible under circumstances that do not apply to a recreational retailer. A CBD business can face another set of product and jurisdiction rules. A B2B cannabis laboratory has a completely different customer and conversion path.

Before scaling spend, we examine:

  • business and offer eligibility;
  • target jurisdictions;
  • keyword intent;
  • ad language;
  • landing-page language and claims;
  • geographic targeting;
  • negative keywords;
  • conversion tracking;
  • lead qualification;
  • economics after the initial conversion.

If those pieces do not support a viable campaign, increasing spend is not the next step.

Qualified Demand Matters More Than Cheap Clicks

Cannabis-related searches can attract a lot of curiosity.

Curiosity is expensive when the campaign needs customers, patients or qualified business leads.

Search terms have to be judged by what happens after the click.

For a medical-cannabis service, that can mean whether the lead is eligible and books an evaluation. For B2B, it may mean whether the enquiry came from a company that could actually buy the service. For ecommerce, the useful signal could be revenue rather than a form submission.

That feedback needs to make its way back into the account. Otherwise paid search gets optimized around whichever conversion was easiest to count.

The Landing Page Has to Carry Its Share

A compliant ad cannot rescue a confusing landing page.

People still need to understand the offer, eligibility, location, pricing where appropriate, next steps and any meaningful limitation before they are asked to convert.

We review the ad and landing page together because the promise cannot change when someone clicks.

This also reduces a problem I see in regulated campaigns more than I should: cautious advertising sending people to aggressive website copy that creates an entirely different risk.

It does not quietly expand into Meta, programmatic media, CTV or a full cannabis advertising program. Those are separate channels with their own economics, rules and expertise.

The Published Work Covers Very Different Cannabis Buyers

For a Texas medical-cannabis engagement managed through ColaDigital, a four-month Google Search campaign produced 847 qualified leads at roughly US$31 per lead from about US$26,450 in spend. The broader combined Google and Meta program produced 1,580 qualified leads. The published record reports no ad disapprovals during that measured period.

Another medical-marijuana-card campaign in Utah and Ohio generated 850 Google Ads conversions over three months, with a 16% conversion rate, US$3.24 average CPC and US$20 CPA on approximately US$17,000 in spend.

For a Canadian B2B cannabis-testing laboratory, the first 30 days produced 57 qualified leads, a 4.1% lead conversion rate and a 500% increase in recorded goal completions.

Those examples are not grouped together because the businesses were similar. They were not.

They are useful because they show regulated paid search across medical services and cannabis B2B, in both the United States and Canada.

The campaigns belong to ColaDigital's history and involved Vee's work before DankRank. They do not predict another company's result, budget, eligibility or approval outcome.

Paid search gives us fast evidence about demand, geography, offers and landing pages. Search terms show how people describe what they want. Geographic performance shows where demand is strongest. Conversion data tells us whether the offer and the page are doing their share.

We use that evidence beyond the ad account. It can change what we prioritize in organic search, local pages, content and AI visibility work. Sometimes the fastest lesson from paid search is that the problem isn't traffic at all. It's the offer, the page or the way the business is being described.

The account still has to earn its keep. But if we're paying for the data, we should use it.

08

When Paid Search Isn't the Best Next Dollar

Paid search is a poor next investment when the account has no reliable path from a click to a qualified business outcome.

Lead tracking may stop at the form, the landing page may be too vague, customer economics may not support the CPC, or policy eligibility may still be uncertain. Any one of those can justify slowing down before more budget goes into the account.

The starting review looks at the offer, current policy conditions, search demand, account history where available, landing pages, conversion measurement and the places the campaign is most likely to fail.

If the evidence points toward organic search, local visibility or fixing measurement first, that is the recommendation we make.

Working out which of those earns the money first is what Cannabis Marketing is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can cannabis businesses run Google Ads?

Some cannabis-adjacent businesses, medical services, CBD businesses and B2B organizations may have viable Google Ads opportunities depending on the offer, jurisdiction, targeting, landing page and current platform rules. In Canada, Google is also running a limited Search pilot through December 31, 2026 for certain licensed cannabis businesses and authorized retailers. Outside applicable programs and exceptions, direct cannabis product promotion remains heavily restricted. Eligibility has to be reviewed case by case.

Can DankRank guarantee Google Ads approval?

No. Google controls its advertising policies and approval systems. DankRank can build campaigns around current requirements and responsible language, but we do not promise approval or use tactics intended to evade platform rules.

What is cannabis PPC?

Cannabis PPC usually refers to pay-per-click advertising related to cannabis businesses or services. This DankRank service is specifically focused on Google Ads and paid search rather than a full programmatic, social and display advertising package.

Do you manage cannabis Google Ads in both the USA and Canada?

Yes, when the business and offer are eligible. Market rules and campaign viability can vary substantially between countries, states, provinces and business types, so the first step is always an eligibility and opportunity review.

How do you judge whether a cannabis Google Ads campaign is working?

Clicks are not enough. Depending on the business, useful measures can include qualified leads, booked evaluations, purchases, revenue, cost per qualified action, conversion quality and the reasons prospects fail to become customers.
