Step 1: Define What Visibility Means for the Business

A software company may care about recommendation prompts and category comparisons. A publisher may care more about source citations. A local business may care about location-dependent recommendations. An ecommerce brand may care about product mentions and referral visits.

I start with the outcome before selecting the metric. Otherwise the easiest thing to measure becomes the strategy.

02

Step 2: Build a Core Prompt Set

Use prompts that represent real discovery behaviour:

category questionsproblem/solution questionscomparison questionsbuyer-intent questionsuse-case questionslocation-qualified questions where geography mattersselected branded questions when brand understanding itself is being tested

Keep a stable core set. You can add new prompts as the market changes, but label them as new so the historical comparison remains honest.

03

Step 3: Choose the AI Systems to Track

The right engine set depends on the audience and the research question. A common program may observe ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI search experiences, but every business doesn't need every platform in every report.

Record the engine with every observation. Don't merge results as if the products retrieve and cite information in the same way.

04

Step 4: Track Citations Separately

For each prompt, record whether the brand's own site or another relevant source was cited. Useful fields include:

cited domaincited URLbrand associated with the sourcepromptenginedaterepeat observationsource type

Citations are easier to audit later when the raw URL is preserved.

05

Step 5: Track Mentions + Recommendations

Record whether the brand appears in the answer even when its site isn't cited. Then mark whether the brand was actually recommended in a prompt where recommendations make sense.

A mention in a background paragraph and a "top three options" recommendation shouldn't score the same just because both contain the company name.

06

Step 6: Record Competitors in the Same Observation

Competitor tracking gives the result context. If three competitors appear and the brand doesn't, that is different from a prompt where nobody in the category gets named.

It also lets you see whether a visibility change belongs to your brand or whether the whole result set shifted.

07

Step 7: Capture Source Overlap

Look at which domains appear across engines and prompt families. Repeated source patterns can tell you whether the answers are leaning on first-party sites, publishers, community sources, directories, documentation, government material or something else.

That can change the optimization strategy, although copying a source type won't guarantee the same citation.

08

Step 8: Add Referral Traffic

Use analytics to record identifiable AI referral visits. Keep the source labels clean enough that ChatGPT, Perplexity or other referrers don't disappear into a generic referral bucket, and preserve available UTM parameters or reliable referrers.

Referral traffic is valuable because it moves the measurement closer to business behaviour. It remains one part of the visibility picture.

09

Step 9: Decide on a Measurement Cadence

A weekly cadence may be enough for a stable core prompt set. A live experiment may need more frequent observations, while a large research study may use defined collection windows rather than continuous monitoring. If the cadence changes, record it so later results can still be compared on the same basis.

10

Step 10: Keep the Raw Observation

Dashboards are good at hiding the weird thing that explains the result. Keep enough raw data to go back and inspect what the answer actually did.

If a score jumps, you should be able to see whether citations increased, recommendations increased, new prompts were added or the engine simply behaved differently during that collection window.

11

How We Build a Visibility Score

A score can summarize the tracking set, but the formula should be documented. You may weight citations, recommendations and mentions differently because they represent different levels of visibility.

There is no universal correct weighting. I care that the same rules are applied over time and that the underlying events remain available. We use the score to support the analysis, not replace it.

12

What About AI Visibility Tools?

Tools can make prompt execution, logging, competitor comparison and trend reporting much faster. They can also make one dashboard number look directly comparable with another vendor's number when the methods differ.

Before trusting the score, inspect the prompt methodology, engine coverage, refresh frequency, scoring rules and what counts as a mention or citation.

13

Use GA4 for What GA4 Can Actually See

GA4 can help measure identifiable referral visits and what those visitors do on the site. Influence without a click falls outside that view.

We pair referral data with what we're seeing at the prompt level instead of asking analytics to measure an AI-search job it can't fully see.

14

Report the Uncertainty

An AI-search report should be allowed to say:

sample too smallresult unstableengine behaviour changedsource could not be verifiedno meaningful movementnot enough evidence to recommend a site change

I consider those useful outcomes. A measurement system that can only produce green arrows will eventually produce bad decisions.

Example: The DankRank Launch Baseline

We are using this model on DankRank from Day 0. The Launch AI Visibility Baseline records citations, mentions, recommendations, source presence, organic visibility, referrals and the zero state before optimization has a chance to muddy the history.

The separate Measure AI Visibility Before You Optimize It page explains why we insist on that sequence. Our larger 2026 benchmark design is published in The State of AI Search Visibility 2026.
